Abruzzo

Located between the central Apennines and the Adriatic Sea, this region is mountainous in the west with remote hill towns that are rarely visited contrasting with its sandy beaches on the east coast.

Many hill towns were abandoned and left intact therefore providing good historic sites along with the many castles that are located in the area.

Although currently unspoiled by mass tourism, this relaxed and beautiful region does have both ski and seaside resorts that are growing in popularity.

Molise

Way off the beaten track, even for Italians, this small and sparsely populated region contains forested and hilly terrain.

There are some treasures within however with well preserved castles, churches and interesting ruins dotted around.

The capital of the region, Campobasso has an old and new town as well as charming neighbourhoods to visit.

Campania

The gateway to the south, this region has numerous highlights enough to keep most visitors happy. Firstly there is the capital of the region, Naples, birthplace of Italy’s most famous food, Pizza.

Then there is the ancient city of Pompeii with its fascinating though unfortunate history along with Mount Vesuvius. And finally there is the stunning Amalfi coast is also here with its beautiful towns and the world renowned island of Capri.

Puglia

This long region stretches right to the heel of Italy and includes a vast stretch of sun drenched coastline. The flat terrain is full of olive groves as this region is responsible for half of the nations production of oil.

The home of the famous trulli house, a conical structure built with no mortar, the town of Alberobello, a UNESCO site, is the best place to see these unique homes.

Lecce is also a stunning city to visit with a fine display, particularly on facades, of baroque stonework.

Basilicata

This region is one for the naturists with its cragged mountains, wooded areas and picturesque lakes. It also contains some small ancient villages, churches and castles. In particular there are the unique cave churches of Matera, listed on the UNESCO world heritage list.

Calabria

Located in the toe of Italy, this is an underdeveloped area, hindered by the mountainous terrain and with a relatively small population. However it is best known for its scenery and coastline with beautiful mountains giving way to clean sandy beaches. The unspoilt nature of this region has started to attract more tourists.
